A Stress-Free Guide to Outfits for Family Photos

Picking outfits for family photos can feel stressful — but it doesn’t have to be! Here are my go-to tips to help your crew look coordinated, comfortable, and timeless in your photos.

1. Start with a Color Palette

Choose 2–3 main colors and 1–2 neutrals (like cream, tan, denim, or gray).

Soft, natural tones photograph beautifully — think dusty blue, sage, rust, cream, and olive. Avoid bright neons or loud logos that distract from your faces!

Pro tip: Pull colors from your home decor so your photos will look perfect on your walls.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in jeans and white shirts! Mix patterns and textures — think mom in a flowy dress, dad in a solid shirt, and kids in soft prints that tie it all together.

3. Keep It Comfortable

You’ll be sitting, standing, maybe even chasing little ones — so make sure everyone can move easily.

Kids especially do best when they’re not tugging at itchy clothes or stiff collars.

4. Layer and Add Texture

Layered looks (cardigans, vests, scarves, or hats) add depth and personality to photos. Textured fabrics like linen, knits, or denim photograph beautifully.

5. Think About the Season

  • Fall: Warm tones like rust, olive, and mustard. Boots and cozy layers.
  • Spring: Soft pastels, floral prints, and light fabrics.
  • Summer: Airy neutrals and breathable fabrics.
  • Winter: Jewel tones, sweaters, and boots.

6. Mind the Little Details

Empty your pockets, avoid bright nail polish, and keep hair accessories simple.

Shoes matter too — skip sneakers unless they fit your style!

7. Plan Ahead

Lay everything out a few days before your session and snap a quick photo to see how the colors work together. That little step saves so much stress on photo day.

8. When in Doubt — Ask Me!

I love helping clients style their sessions. You can always send me outfit options and I’ll help you pull it together!
